About St John's Anglican Church Port Fairy

Wednesday worship 10:30 am - the current covid rules allows room for visitors to join. Sunday worship will recommence in June but until the rules change again they are not able to accomodate visitors in the worship. Visitors are welcome to wander around the ground and admire the church building from the outside. The iconic St John's Anglican Church, surrounded by lawns and the original stone wall, was built in 1856, to replace the smaller, wooden one, then in Sackville Street. The driving force behind the 'new' church was the first Vicar, Dr Braime, a wealthy, highly educated and adventurous Englishman. The gallery was added in 1902, the organ in 1908 and the reredos in several stages, being completed in the 1920s. The tower was built during the wool boom in 1952. The church has held continuous worship from the day it was built to the present. These days it is also a first class and well used concert venue, with its gorgeous ambiance and excellent acoustic and recently its own portable stage and stage lights to ensure that the audience can see as well as hear the concerts. The hall is well utilised by a large variety of community groups and, along with the lawned space between the hall and the church, is becoming a popular, secular wedding venue....
